You have to turn on one part of your brain to do one task and then when you start another task you turn that last part of your brain off and turn on the other.  When you are interacting with technology and you send a text or like a picture on instagram or anything like that your brain releases a hormone called dopamine.   So, when you send a text message your brain releases a little bit of that hormone and that is what gives you the pleasure that makes us want to keep switching between things so that we can get satisfaction from it.  Studies have also shown that multitasking increases the production of cortisol, which is a stress hormone.  The study also stated that the IQ drops were similar to those who smoke marijuana and people that lose a night of sleep.
