Here in the United States we have one of the best public education systems in the world, yet people take advantage of that and waste their time.   Many people go to universities or college to try and gain more knowledge in hopes of becoming very successful when they graduate. The idea of higher education is supposed to get rid of the people that take advantage of public schooling.  Lower education is considered to be high school.  High school is paid for through your taxes unlike higher education which is college.  This is where students and families have to pay a certain amount of money to attend that certain university or college.  This creates a better education for the people who actually want to learn.

Barnett says that higher education is nothing like lower education as in high school.  He also states “A genuine  higher education is unsettling; it is not meant to be a cosy experience.”  Throughout my high school experience I was basically handed everything that I needed so I can be successful.  College isn’t like that.  The professors aren’t going to chase you around and make sure you’re doing all your work.  Due to me being a freshman I do not know what this whole college experience is going to be like.  When I talk to my friends who graduated the year before me from the same high school, say that high school is nothing like college.  College is proven to be more accelerated.  In high school you would be forced to get a tutor by your teacher.  The high school would get you that tutor to help succeed.  In college the professors won’t be chasing you around to make sure you’re getting the help you need.  College is suppose to be a time where you grow up and learn how to accomplish things on your own and being independent with your work.

In the selection from Martha Nussbaum she states “unlike virtually every nation in the world, we have a liberal arts model of university education.”  I believe that a liberal arts model of university education is good in a sense that it gets people out there comfort zones and to try new things.  This is how we grow as humans is by trying new things.  Going to a liberal arts school allows you to see beyond just your major.  It makes you take a class like public speaking which you will need throughout your entire life.  Maybe you will one day be the best man at your best friends wedding.  Having taken this class allows you to write a proper speech and read it allowed in front of people at the wedding that you may not know.   Martha also states “ This tradition argues that education is not just about the passive assimilation of facts and cultural traditions, but about challenging the mind to become more active, competent and thoughtfully critical in a complex world.  By taking these classes during your years in college grows you into a human being.  Tying this together with the liberal arts model of education college, students take classes that they will most likely need.  This allows each generation of children to be ready for the real world and not know what to do.

Having one of the best public education systems in the the world is a waste when people take advantage of it not accomplish anything.  Going on to higher education is to weed out the kids that don’t want to be there and for you to try and become successful in your adulthood.  Higher education is supposed to get you out of your comfort zones and grow as a human.
