Here in the United States we have one of the best public education systems in the world, yet people take advantage of that and waste their time.  Many people go to universities/college to try and gain more knowledge in hopes of becoming very successful when they graduate from their college or university.  The idea of higher education is supposed to get rid of the people that take advantage of public schooling.  Lower education, as in High School is paid for through taxes, unlike higher education as in college where students and families have to pay a certain amount of money to go to a certain university/college.  This is to create a better education for the people that actually want to learn.

Barnett says that higher eduction is nothing like lower education, as in high school.  He also states that higher education isn’t supposed to be a cosy experience.  I believe what he is trying to say there is that you shouldn’t be looking to get everything to you like in high school.  Let’s just state college is a million times harder than high school.  unlike in high school where if you were doing bad in a class the teacher would make you get a tutor and you would have to go see the tutor everyday and when the teacher would stay after you were forced to stay after.  In college professors aren’t going to be chasing you around to make sure you’re getting help when you need it.  College is suppose to be a time where you are supposed to grow up and learn how to accomplish things on your own and not have people nagging at you every five minutes to make sure you are doing your work.

In the selection from Martha Nussbaum, she states “unlike virtually every nation in the world, we have a liberal arts model of university education.”  I believe that a liberal arts model of university is good in a sense that it gets people out of there comfort zones and to try new things.  This is how we grow as humans, by trying new thing.  Going to a liberal allows you to see beyond just your major.  It makes you take a class like public speaking which you will need throughout your entire life.  Taking this class will allow to grow in public speaking or writing something that you will need throughout your entire life.  Martha also states that “the tradition of education is not just about the passive assimilation of facts but it is about challenging your mind to become more active, competent and thoughtfully critical in a complex world.”  By taking these classes during your years in college, students take classes that you will most likely need throughout your entire life .  This allows each generation of children to be ready for the real world and not know what to do.

Having on of the best public education systems in the world is a waste when people take advantage of it by not accomplishing anything.  Going on to higher education is to weed out the kids that don’t want to be there and for you to try and become successful in your adulthood.  Higher education is supposed to get you out of your comforts zone and grow as a human.
